Even if you never find out what a Penguin Prison is, there's no denying Chris Glover aka Penguin Prison has made a brilliant record. If you're a fan of New York disco, as accessible as it is angular, all burbling bass lines, resonant rhythms, shimmering synths and heavenly melodies, then you'll love the new Penguin Prison album.

Imagine, if you will, Chic produced by James Murphy, or a collaboration between Prince and The Human League. It is some measure of Penguin Prison's skills in the studio, on vocals and in terms of songwriting, that such illusory marvels have been achieved on this superb self-titled collection, that some critics have gone as far as to hail it a modern day Off The Wall masterpiece.

"It's not a concept album about Michael," says Prison, or maybe we should call him Penguin, of his all-time hero "But it's definitely been influenced by him."

To say he was an early starter would be an understatement. From the age of 10 he was singing in the local gospel choir. When he was 11, he got an agent and began recording jingles. By 12, he had learned to play guitar and was into punk rock, the American variety – bands such as Green Day, NOFX and Bad Religion. He even performed as a teen at the legendary CBGBs with his band The Museum.

Chris became Penguin Prison at the start of 2009. It wasn't long before he earned a reputation as remixer du jour for the likes of Marina and the Diamonds, Goldfrapp and Passion Pit. He agrees that he conferred NY kudos especially on the British artists, and admits his favorite remix was for Jamiroquai, adding that the secret to a good remix is "to throw everything away from the original track and start from scratch".

It was inevitable that Chris would then make music of his own, which he began in late 2009. You can hear the spectacular results on the debut Penguin Prison album, which sounds to all intents and purposes like a Greatest Hits collection, so chock-full it is of catchy hooks and classic pop choruses. There is Multi-Millionaire, which is about "being rich even if you've got no money" and one titled Don't Fuck With My Money that features Jackson-style percussive gasps and a lyric that pushes the envelope. "I was worried it was too crazy – 'Can I really say that?' People said leave it in, so I did. "All my lyrics are sarcastic but serious as well," he adds. "So I'm really saying 'don't fuck with my money'! Because if you try to, it's not going to be good…"

Penguin Prison Is signed to Downtown Records.
Los Angeles based DJ & producer. SONNS is also in the production and dj duo SPLIT SECS.

Alexandre Mouracade's roots in the Los Angeles music scene span the better part of two decades not only as a DJ but as the founder of the globally hyped party, Making Shapes and more recently as a charting producer under the moniker, SONNS and Split Secs with Travis Kirschbaum. Mouracade's roots reach as far back as the Southern California punk scene that gave rise to an equally as rich underground club world in the 90s. As a record selector, he's shared space with talent reaching as far back as his days holding a residency with his eclectic opening & closing sets for the World Famous Beat Junkies and more recently traversing the techno, house, disco and left-field landscapes with Mark E, Simian Mobile Disco, Ivan Smagghe and Eddie C.

In 2012, Split Secs landed on various charts and track listings when the duo’s first EP “I’m Not Losin’” (Jolly Jams) earned heavy rotation worldwide. The warm and relatable analog feel carried over to Mouracade's solo effort, SONNS with his debut track, 'On My Mind' moving feet and played globally by heavyweights, Matt Walsh, The Hacker, Cosmo Vitelli and many more.

As Mouracade's reputation continues to earn attention, label owners like James Friedman of Throne of Blood have tapped him for incendiary, genre-bending remix work for Waze and Odyssey. In addition to owning and operating the Machine Limited label with Kirschbaum, Mouracade is not only staking claim for himself as one to watch but giving Los Angeles the attention it deserves as a bastion for dance music.
Los Angeles DJs and longtime buds DJ Metric & Hoff joined forces in the spring of 2013 to create production duo Overjoy - a blend of their favorite sounds, styles and influences. The pair are currently sparking up a buzz on the streets with their eclectic back to back DJ Sets and vibey original productions.
Valida (KCRW)
Valida (KCRW)
Originally from Sarajevo, Valida fled a heavily conflicted Bosnia to pursue higher education in the US. In the course of her studies, she won a coveted nationwide Pew Charitable Trusts Fellowship, which allowed her to create and release a DJ-culture documentary film, Concentric Beats.

A musician and a performer since the age of four, her work on the film sparked a desire to dig deeper into her vinyl collection and explore the art of mixing. She founded a popular weekly club night and rose through the ranks to become an important figure in LA's nightlife scene.

Her specialty is a seamless blending of a variety of music styles and her reputation for fearlessly fusing everything from disco to country and beyond made her a perfect fit for KCRW, where she started on air in 2010.

Since purchasing her first set of turntables in 1998, she has been featured at a variety of high profile events worldwide, including; Winter Music Conference, SXSW Music Conference, Regine in Paris, Dragon-I in Hong Kong, Mystique in Kuala Lumpur, Boudoir in Dubai, Nuphoria in Tokyo, Candela in Puerto Rico, Organic in Mexico, Barbados, San Salvador and her native Bosnia.

When The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas opened its doors in December 2010, Valida played the launch party and continued to hold a monthly residency through summer of 2011. She also co-founded Hollywood's buzz-night, School Night at Bardot, which received Paper Magazine's coveted People's Choice Award for "America's Best Party" in its first year. She deejayed and assisted with talent booking before shifting her focus on her own music making which, due to a demanding DJ schedule, had been on hiatus since 2006.

Armed with a piano, Logic, and a midi controller, Valida has created remixes for LA's Foster The People, Jenny O., Saint Motel, and Bosnian pop star, Dino Merlin. Currently she is working on her original music with a debut EP slated for a summer 2013 release.

Valida can be heard on air on KCRW (89.9 FM) in Los Angeles on rotating Sundays from 3-6AM as part of their program The Lab. She can also be seen at The Standard Hollywood, where each Wednesday evening she curates and deejays an intimate evening of live music called Desert Nights, her homage to the 60's Laurel Canyon culture.
