Scratch Famous
As co-founder of Deadly Dragon Sound System, Scratch Famous has long been a respected force in the reggae community as both a selector, a retailer, a radio host, a promoter and a collector of reggae music from the foundation of Ska all the way up to the newest tunes bubbling up from yard. With a collection spanning more than 100,000 pieces of vinyl and acetate (7", 10", 12", Dubplate and LP) Scratch Famous has the vaults, the vibes and the refined taste to provide the finest Jamaican music ever made.
Scratch Famous and a partner formed Deadly Dragon Sound System in 1995 in Chicago. Initially, Deadly Dragon was started as a way to share an appreciation of Jamaican music with a local audience who, at that time, had no outlets to hear DJ music of any kind. Within a few months, Deadly Dragon's Sunday night at Empty Bottle had become a legend. Within Chicago's often segregated environment, Deadly Dragon managed to unite all the tribes under the banner of hardcore reggae music.
In 1998 Scratch Famous returned to his hometown of New York City and quickly became a mainstay in the city's hot bed of sound systems and selectors. Over the past 16 years Deadly Dragon Sound has held down weekly residencies at some of New York's finest clubs such as The Delancey, Happy Ending, APT, Joe's Pub, Pianos, Double Happiness and King Size. In addition, Scratch Famous and Deadly Dragon has brought together a series of live events such as Roots Of Sound System with such artists and sound systems as Johnny Osbourne, Tony Tuff, Yami Bolo, Screechy Dan, Mighty Crown, Down Beat, Ranking Joe, Cornell Campbell, Wayne Smith, Stone Love, Channel One Sound, Chuck Turner, Nardo Ranks, Carlton Livingstone, Shabba Ranks, Major Mackarel and more. Scratch Famous is also the Selector for Dig Deeper's Jamaican themed events which featured Ken Booth, Keith & Tex, Stranger Cole, The Gay Lads and Ken Parker.
In 2005, Jeremy Freeman aka Scratch Famous and Jason DeBeck aka Selector JD opened the retail side of Deadly Dragon, expanding it into, not just a sound-system, but one of the finest resources for reggae fanatics around. The retail store at 102 Forsyth, in the heart of NY's Chinatown, is a unique retail environment with a comprehensive selection of new and vintage vinyl from Mento 78s to the newest tunes from Jamaica. Deadly Dragon has also created a limited edition reissue imprint label that has released over 35 different 7” vinyl singles to great critical acclaim. You can see the store's web site at www.deadlydragonsound.com and follow it on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Deadly-Dragon-Sound-System .
Always seeking ways to spread their knowledge and love for Jamaican music, Scratch Famous and Deadly Dragon Sound now does a monthly PODCAST and have a weekly live session at The Delancey (168 Delancey Street) called DOWNTOWN TOP RANKING.
Scratch Famous is a true lover of Jamaican music and that love and respect is reflected in his expansion from a simple selector to the multi-faceted cultural expression that he is part of.
