Wolves In The Throne Room
Wolves In The Throne Room
Written almost exclusively in a windowless, black room over the long dark nights of winter 2005, Diadem of 12 Stars was the first official Wolves In The Throne Room release. Re-imagining Black Metal as an ode to rain storms, wood smoke and the wild energies of the Pacific Northwest, Wolves In The Throne Room created a unique melancholic atmosphere. Diadem of 12 Stars is about lunar sorcery on Cascadian mountain tops and encounters with wild spirits. In contrast to the icy, razor sharp soundscapes of their 90s Norwegian forebears, the sound of Diadem is lush and ethereal, dripping with rain soaked moss and lichen.

In 2006, all but a few self-defined black metal acts performed live. In contrast, WITTR honed the material for Diadem by touring across the country's basements and squats. Its raw analog sound in many ways pays homage to the band's varied influences: the harsh black metal of Norwegians Ulver and Emperor or their American counterparts Weakling and Ludicra, the monolithic heaviness of Neurosis and Swans, the sorrowful Funeral Doom of My Dying Bride and in places, the mournful goth of Dead Can Dance. Yet, WITTR distills these inspirations to create a sound that is entirely their own.

Described by guitarist Nathan Weaver as the most raw and "punk" of their five full length releases Diadem was recorded live to tape in Oakland by Tim Green. Joined in the studio by Jamie Myers (Hammers of Misfortune / Sabbath Assembly ) and Dino Sommese (Asunder / Dystopia), every song was rendered in one or two takes and the album was mixed without the aid of a computer. Originally released on a small DIY label and unavailable physically for many years, this re-issued version has been carefully re-mastered by Jason Ward at Chicago Mastering Service. The band re-developed every photograph from the original negatives, creating richer, high quality prints in order to present the artwork as originally envisioned.

Wolves In The Throne Room have released five studio albums, 2 EP's & multiple live albums to date, including Diadem of 12 Stars (2006), Two Hunters (2007), Black Cascade (2008), Celestial Lineage (2011), Celestite (2014 - an instrumental, experimental companion record to Celestial Lineage). They are currently working on new material, their heaviest and darkest in some time.
Incantation
Without a doubt one of the most important bands ever to emerge in the world of extreme music, INCANTATION has set the standard for USDM and is often credited as a pioneer in the genre. For over two decades, INCANTATION has stood out as one of the most uncompromising forces in metal with their blasphemous and bone-crushing doom-tinged brand of death. Responsible for classics like Onward to Golgotha and Diabolical Conquest, INCANTATION's legacy speaks for itself.

Throughout their illustrious career, INCANTATION has become an infamous death metal institution and a pillar of the international underground metal scene. The staggering combination of the band's ominous sound, vicious style, incredible work ethic and unwavering dedication has left an indelible mark unmatched by all except the most legendary of their peers. Arguably metal's hardest working band, INCANTATION has ventured forth like conquering crusaders, converting thousands of new fans time after time. From Canada to Colombia, Argentina to Europe, Central America to Australia and the States, INCANTATION has endeavored to reach every corner of the world. Additionally, they have given such other prestigious acts as Nile, Decapitated, Krisiun, Enslaved, and Kataklsym their first opportunities to tour on U.S. soil.

The INCANTATION of today sees the band stronger than ever with a lineup comprised of founder/guitarist/vocalist John McEntee, longtime drummer Kyle Severn, guitarist Alex Bouks [Goreaphobia] and bassist Chuck Sherwood [Bloodstorm]. The combined efforts of all four members have resulted in an album that will undoubtedly go down as among the best in the band's history. Vanquish in Vengeance, INCANTATION's long-awaited follow up to 2006's Primordial Decimation, features over 50 minutes of the band's trademark dark and unholy death metal. Recorded at the infamous Mars Recording Compound with Engineer Bill Korecky and mixed and mastered by the legendary Dan Swano at Unisound studios, Vanquish in Vengeance deals with the numerous counts of genocide in the name of religion our society has witnessed over a millennia.

Sherwood elaborates on the album's lyrical content, "The concept of our world so enslaved by monotheistic dogma that only a rebirth, with nothing but distain for the previous, would be tolerated. The lyrical content is the vehicle of this ideology from modern to ancient history combined with the occult/pagan views and the rage we as a band hold for those religions and their followers who'd refuse to acknowledge their own failure. Let this vortex we offer permeate and enlighten or shun and obliterate."

While few artists leave an outstanding mark upon the music world, INCANTATION has built a legacy that will extend past their years. Their shadow has been cast forever over the genre, and we are eternally grateful.
Pelican
Pelican
After four years of silence, instrumental metal standard bearers Pelican have come thundering back, with Forever Becoming, an eight-song album destined to be considered one of the most punishingly rewarding albums of the year.

Before their hiatus, the group had laid a sizeable chunk of the groundwork for the instrumental metal scene that's come into its own in the 13 years since they started playing together. After 2009 the band found itself slightly adrift, and found the day to day struggle of being full-time underground musicians colliding with new families and non-musical careers. Wisely, they didn't make any rash decisions, and as suits a band known for making dense, meditative sounds they simply patiently figured out how to move past their obstacles.

This reborn Pelican is purer, more focused, and far more assured. Recorded at Electrical Audio in Chicago with engineer Chris Common, and featuring The Swan King guitarist Dallas Thomas (replacing the amicably departed Laurent Schroeder-Lebec) Forever Becoming is an immense, speaker-rattling meditation on the infinite cycle of death and life. It takes a lot of experience and a lot of confidence to attempt a head-on ascent of the biggest, most monolithic theme in art, but Forever Becoming is proof that Pelican has plenty of both, and knows how to wield them.
